Introduction: |
The course for Social Science practitioners aims to build scientific perspective, attitude and skills for systematic enquiry by developing understanding of philosophical foundations of research, various elements of research design and methods and tools for data collection and analysis. The course will enable comprehension of principles and elements of research methodology, to formulate research problem, objectives and questions. It will introduce students to various methods, tools and techniques related to social research. The focus of the course would be designing studies for applied research. It will also guide them to deal with various ethical and methodological concerns in doing research. The course will also discuss the limitations, benefits, appropriateness, and challenges of using qualitative and quantitative techniques in applied research.

Objectives: |
OBJECTIVES
1. To train participants to identify and discuss the role and importance of research in the social sciences.
2. To identify and discuss the issues and concepts salient to the research process.
3. To identify and discuss the complex issues inherent in selecting a research problem, selecting an appropriate research design, and implementing a research project.
4. To identify and discuss the concepts and procedures of sampling, data collection, analysis and reporting.

About Instructor: |
Professor Divya Upadhyaya Joshi has a Masters and Doctoral degree in Political Science. Her area of specialisation is Gender Studies. She has 18 years of teaching experience and 30 years of research experience. Her latest publications include 'Urban Spaces and Gender in Asia' (ISBN 978-3-030-36493-9; Springer Nature, 2020) and Gendered Cityscapes ( ISBN 978-81-316-1114-2; Rawat Publications,2022).She has over 30 research publications to her credit, 02 scholars have been awarded PhD degrees and 08 PhD scholars are working under her supervision. She has been rendering her services at the UGC HRDC,Kumaun University since 2007. |

Certification: |
As per UGC Guidelines
The grading will be as follows:
(i) A+: 85 percent and above
(ii) A: 70 per cent to less than or equal to 84 percent
(iii) B: 60 per cent to less than or equal to 69 per cent
(iv) C: 50 per cent to less than or equal to 59 per cent
(v) F: Below 49 per cent
Those teacher participants who get F grades are required to repeat the programme
after a gap of one year without financial commitment to UGC-HRDC.

Assessment Plan Method: |
The total marks are to be fixed at 100 and the same may be decided in the following
manner:
(i) Overall response - 20
(ii) Seminars (in diverse topics mentioned in component A) - 20
(iii) Project/survey/others (topics like climate change, environment and social
connect etc.) - 20
(iv) ICT based teaching/ MOODLE/ Micro-teaching/participation - 20
(v) Multiple-choice objective tests -20
The above distribution may be adjusted to meet specific requirements. The grades will be indicated on the certificate to be given to the teacher participant at the end of the programme.
