Introduction: |
Indian English literature or Indian Writing in English, is the body of work by Indian writers who write in the English language. The history of English writing in India began during the British era with the works of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio and Michael Madhusudan Dutt followed by Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo. Other writers who wrote passionately and contributed to the growth and popularity of Indian English fiction in the 1930s were R. K. Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. Indian literature in English has come a long way with writers like Salman Rushdie, Anita Desai and other post colonial writers along with the introduction of the second generation of Diasporic writers like Jhumpa Lahiri, Kiran Desai, Chitra Banerjee divakaruni, Bharti Mukherjee and others depicting the changed socio-cultural and political ethos. With changing times and contexts, Indian English literature too has seen immense growth in terms of its style and genre. Recent trends see the emergence of sub genres emerging in the form of small town novels, popular novels or pulp fiction or campus fiction showing new urban realism by writers like Chetan Bhagat, Ravindra Singh as well as Chick Literature by writers like Advaita Kala. Manju Kapoor and Anita Nair, on the other hand, are known for Corporate fiction. The Comic and Graphic novels is yet another emerging trend in Indian writing in English dealing with retelling of myths, for both grownups and children by writers like Pratibha Ray. |
Objectives: |
Objectives of the Course: The primary objective of the course is to refresh and rekindle the interest of the participants in Indian English writings. With the immense growth in the World Literatures in English, it becomes an urgent requirement to keep pace with what is happening with Indian English writing. The course acknowledges the challenge and tries to fulfil this requirement. Translations and film adaptations lead to an interest in interdisciplinary works and encourage participants to take up research projects to further add to the already existing literary works. The course keeps this objective too in mind. The recent trend help the teachers immensely in various assignments ranging from the modifications in the syllabus (making it more modern and contextual) to guidance of the research scholars, and this course precisely tries to fulfil this need of the teacher participants. |

About Instructor: |
Professor L.M. Joshi has been teaching English literature in D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University since the year 1986. He has held several administrative positions since then and is the HOD and Director of the campus at present. He has been engaged in several academic activities and has published profusely both in international and national journals. He has lectured as well as chaired many national and international seminars and conferences and has guided more than 30 scholars successfully. He is still pursuing this academic responsibility actively and seriously. |

As per UGC Guidelines
The grading will be as follows:
(i) A+: 85 percent and above
(ii) A: 70 per cent to less than or equal to 84 percent
(iii) B: 60 per cent to less than or equal to 69 per cent
(iv) C: 50 per cent to less than or equal to 59 per cent
(v) F: Below 49 per cent
Those teacher participants who get F grades are required to repeat the programme
after a gap of one year without financial commitment to UGC-HRDC.

Assessment Plan Method: |
The total marks are to be fixed at 100 and the same may be decided in the following
manner:
(i) Overall response - 20
(ii) Seminars (in diverse topics mentioned in component A) - 20
(iii) Project/survey/others (topics like climate change, environment and social
connect etc.) - 20
(iv) ICT based teaching/ MOODLE/ Micro-teaching/participation - 20
(v) Multiple-choice objective tests -20
The above distribution may be adjusted to meet specific requirements. The grades will be indicated on the certificate to be given to the teacher participant at the end of the programme.
