Introduction: |
UGC-HRDC Refresher Course in English on ‘Teaching English Language and Literature at 21st Century’ has been organized by the Department of English Language studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, Palkalai Nagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu - 625 021 from 21st July 2023 to – 03rd August 2023. The course aimed to improve the Teaching skills on English Language and Literature at 21st Century. The schedule has been prepared as 4 sessions (1st Session (Forenoon 10:00 – 11:30 AM), 2nd Session (Forenoon 11:30 AM – 01:00 PM), 3rd Session (Afternoon 2:00 – 3:30 PM) and 4th Session (Afternoon 3:30 – 5:00 PM) each day.
Resource Persons (Professors & Trainers) from leading educational institutions of India and abroad delivered lectures on various topics and trained the participants on practicing various skills. Each session started with Chief Guest introduction by Course Coordinator, welcome address, daily reporting and ended with interaction, feedback and vote of thanks by participants.
58 professor participants from universities and colleges from various states of India registered to attend the UGC-HRDC Refresher Course in English. 52 participants completed the course successfully.

Objectives: |
UGC-HRDC Refresher Course in English on ‘Teaching English Language and Literature at 21st Century’ enables the University and College Professors;
(a) To comprehend Teaching skills on English Language and Literature at 21st Century.
(b) To apply 21st Century Skills in teaching and learning English effectively.
(c) To analyze literary, stylistic, semantic, semiotic, pragmatic aspects of literary texts.
(d) To discover the linguistic features and functions of the language.
(e) To adapt modern teaching, methods, techniques, strategies and technologies for teaching language and literature.
(f) To deduct competent assessment techniques.

Certification: |
The Professor participants who scored 85 percent and above out of 100 have been graded ‘A+’. Those who scored 70 percent to less than or equal to 84 percent have been given ‘A’. Those who scored 60 percent to less than or equal to 69 percent have been given ‘B’.
Those who scored 50 percent to less than or equal to 59 percent have been given ‘C’. Those who scored below 49 percent were marked ‘F’ and they were asked to repeat the programme after a gap of one year without financial commitment to UGC - HRDC.
The total marks have been fixed at 100 and the same has been decided in the following manner:
1. Multiple-choice objective test - 30
2. Seminars/Micro-teaching - 15
3. Project - 20
4. Participation - 10
5. Holistic response - 25
Total 100

Assessment Plan Method: |
Participants have been continuously assed based on their regular performance. Participants have been asked to deliver welcome address, daily reporting and interaction with the resource person, feedback and vote of thanks at every session, continuous participation, regular attendance which have been considered for holistic approach. Also, each participant has been asked to do a seminar / Micro-teaching. Then they were asked to take a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Test. Moreover Participants have been asked to submit assignments including Project Proposal, Research Article and Action Plan. Participation and Performance have been continuously monitored and assessed for assessment purpose.
The assessment was for Totally 100 Marks in which
Multiple Choice Test (30 Marks), Seminar/Micro-teaching (15 Marks), Project (20 Marks), Participation (10 Marks),
Holistic Approach (25 Marks) have been allotted.
