Introduction: |
1. Brief introduction of the course:
The Short-Term Course in Disaster Management is intended for faculty who require a medium-level understanding of the concepts of hazard, risk and vulnerability, and practical processes involved in the management of natural and anthropogenic disasters. This is an interdisciplinary course and the participants do not need any prior knowledge of the topic, although their own personal experiences or those of other people in your community will be very valuable in your learning.

Objectives of the course:
Upon completion of course the participant will be able to:
1, Define and describe disaster management, hazard, emergency, disaster, vulnerability, risk, and resilience;
2. Identify and describe the types of natural and non-natural disasters and the implications of disasters on your region and environment;
3. List and describe the main hazards and its link with climate change
4. Define the various phases of the disaster management cycle

About Instructor: |
Dr. SHAJI E is currently working as an Associate Professor & Head in the DEPT. OF GEOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF KERALA, INDIA. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Kerala in Metamorphic Petrology and obtained his masters with first rank from the same University. Prior to the University service he worked as a professional hydrogeologist (Scientist D) in Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt of India. He has 23 years of professional/ industry/teaching experience in Geosciences with focus on groundwater and petrology. Five scholars took PhD with him, and guided five M.Phil. and several MSc thesis. Currently 6 research scholars work with him for PhD. He has 52 publications to his credit, out of which 35 are in international journals. He bagged Young Scientist Award from Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, Govt of Kerala and received Highest Grant Award 2019-20 under the Faculty of Science / Applied Sciences & Technology by the University of Kerala. He is the recipient of outstanding reviewer award in Geology by Elsevier. He has edited five volumes/books with ISBN number. He has visited UK, Japan, UAE, China, Madagascar and Srilanka. Research interests are Petrology, disasters, Exploration Geology and Hydrogeology. He also serves as associated editor of Geoscience Frontiers , a high ranking journal in geology, run by Elsevier. |
